PETALING JAYA: Ayer Hitam MP Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong spent his Hari Raya Haji public holiday meeting his constituents and having a dialogue with them.
Dr Wee visited the new landmark in his constituency, the Arena Warna Ayer Hitam, where there are various stalls selling ceramic goods, fruits, kerepek, and keropok.
“For a long time, they (the stall owners) have been operating at the side of the road of Bandar Seramik Ayer Hitam, and now they have moved to the Arena Warna which is located next to the Bus Terminal in town.
“The new location is more comfortable for the traders and their patrons, ” he said in a Facebook post on Friday (July 31).
He added that the merchants were still able to eke out a living, despite a lower volume of foreign tourists.
“Although there was an absence of foreign tourists – especially Singaporeans who enjoy shopping here – the merchants were still able to make a living because there are many domestic tourists visiting the place, ” he said.
He made sure to visit every store to distribute face masks to every merchant there, though he noticed that some of the stores were still shuttered.
“According to the president of the Arena Warna Hawkers and Traders Association, a few stall operators who are aged 60 and above have listened to the advice of the Health Ministry to avoid crowded places which may expose them to the risk of contracting Covid-19.
“I hope that our country will be entirely free of the pandemic which has affected public health and economy, ” he said.
The Transport Minister also held a dialogue session with the Bandar Baru Ayer Hitam Rented Car Drivers Association.
“They have confirmed that all the taxi drivers in Bandar Baru Ayer Hitam have received the one-off Prihatin aid of RM600.
“These drivers of rented cars also informed me that their livelihood has been affected because of a lack of demand for journeys to Kluang, Batu Pahat, Muar and Johor Baru because of the movement control order (MCO), ” he said.
He added that he has approved an allocation of RM5,000 to the association for them to buy the necessary equipment for their office.
