KEPALA BATAS: Five mat rempits (illegal motorcycle racers) including a college student and two Form Five students were detained during two operations at the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR) and Jalan Permatang Pauh.
Seberang Prai Utara OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the operations dubbed as Ops Samseng Jalanan and Ops Mabuk were conducted from 11pm Friday (July 3) until 6am Sunday (July 5).
He said the college student was detained with his two friends while performing dangerous stunts with their motorcycles and riding recklessly on the BORR in Bagan Ajam around 12.30am on Saturday (July 4).
“They were caught racing with each other while performing ‘wheelie’ stunts on their motorcycles from the Bagan Ajam toll plaza and making a U-turn at the Northern Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) before coming back to the toll booth,” ACP Noorzainy said in a statement on Sunday.
ACP Noorzainy said the suspects were arrested after they stopped at KM7.1 of the BORR.
Police also detained two 17-year-old mat rempits racing with each other on the highway.
ACP Noorzainy said the suspects were racing from NBCT going towards the toll booth of Sungai Dua and were arrested when they turned back to the Bagan Ajam Rest & Service (R&R) area.
All five suspects aged between 17 and 23 were detained to facilitate investigations under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Ops Mabuk that was conducted in tandem with the three-day operation also saw 47 summonses issued to motorists for various offences.
ACP Noorzainy said police also tested five motorists for alcohol consumption but have found low-levels on all of them.
A total of 260 summonses were issued during the three-day operations for various offences.
He said police will continue with similar operations every weekend.
“Parents should be alert to their children’s activities so that they will not get involved in unhealthy activities such as illegal racing,” he said.
