JOHOR BARU: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should keep his promise to step down after two years in office, says Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim.
The former state PKR chief said that Dr Mahathir must keep his word if he wants to continue to be loved and adored by the public.
“He (Dr Mahathir) needs to step down next year and give way to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to continue the premiership as promised.
“Two years is enough and he should not stay any longer,” Hassan said when met after a Mooncake Festival in Plentong here on Friday (Sept 27).
Hassan said that he would not “sit still” if Dr Mahathir insist on staying as the Prime Minister after next year.
In a dialogue held at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York on Thursday (Sept 26), Dr Mahathir said that he expects to remain as Malaysia’s Prime Minister for three years at most.
“I promise that I would step down before the next election and give way to another candidate. So, I may have at the most three years perhaps,” he said.
Last month, Hassan said that Dr Mahathir should step down as the Prime Minister and save the Pakatan Harapan government from self-destruction.
“I hope and request that Dr Mahathir takes a brave step like former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, who resigned from his post after leading the British and Allied forces to win the Second World War after defeating Germany and Japan,” he added.
