The beauty of Islam is seen in abundance at the Taman Tamadun Islam (also known as the Islamic Civilisation Park) in Kuala Terengganu.
Located at the Wan Man Island, this outdoor edutainment park features Islamic culture and heritage as its focal theme.
If anything, Terengganu is a great place to discover more about the religion in Malaysia. After all, the state – as attested by the historic Batu Bersurat Terengganu – is among the first in the country to welcome Islam.
The park’s website points out that non-Muslim visitors are just as welcome to visit as their Muslim counterparts. This is to ensure a better understanding of Islam among the country’s multiracial society.
Why you should go
One of the main draws of Taman Tamadun Islam is the scaled Islamic monuments that are found around the world. Although done at a smaller ratio, the structures are still pretty impressive. Look out for landmarks such as India’s Taj Mahal, Saudi Arabia’s Masjidil Haram and Egypt’s Alabaster Mosque, among the many.
The beautiful Crystal Mosque is also one of the park’s icons and is situated within the vicinity. The mosque is unique as built entirely from steel and glass, giving it a crystal-like image.
What to do there
True to its status as an edutainment venue, Taman Tamadun Islam blends fun and knowledge. All the monuments at the park are accompanied by information panels in three languages – English, Bahasa Malaysia and Arabic. Visitors can also engage in interactive videos, games, photos and artefacts at the place.
The park’s location along the Terengganu River also makes it a great spot for photography. Come in the late evening to catch the sunset as well as the gorgeous views of the Crystal Mosque. There are also river cruises for visitors to go on.
In the evening, check out the light show where replicas of the monuments are lit up brilliantly from the public park. Do take note that the monument and river cruise are closed on Tuesdays, except during holiday period.
Who will like it
The area around Taman Tamadun Islam is really scenic and is perfect as a spot for families and friends to gather. While you need tickets to get into the monument, the public park is free for all. From outside, you are able to get great views of the mosque and the river.
The venue also offers special student packages, which is good for an educational school trip for young ones keen on knowing more about Islamic heritage.
If you don’t plan on driving, you can always take the Bas Bandar. The pick up point is at the Majlis Bandaraya Kuala Terengganu bus terminal, with tickets costing RM1 per person.
